Biotechnology
As per UN Convention on Biological Diversity
Biotechnology means any technological application that uses biological systems,
living organism, or derivatives thereof, to make of modify products or
processes for specific use.
Biotechnology has applications in
four major industrial areas, including health care (medical), crop production
and agriculture, non food (industrial) uses of crops and other products [ e.g.
biodegradable plastics, vegetable oil] and environmental uses.
There are many career opportunities in biotech. It
is one of the booming sectors in India and overseas. A who specialize in this
sector is called biotechnologist.
Application of Biotechnology
The application of biotech is rising in different areas
like drug production, pharmacogenomics, gene therapy, genetic testing, rational
drug design, biochemical engineering, biomedical engineering, bio-process engineering, bio system engineering and so
on.
