Oncologist

According to a WHO (World Health Organisation) India report, by 2020   20 million cancer patients globally. There are, however, far fewer oncologists in India than required, especially for surgical and medical (involving therapy such as chemotherapy) treatment.

What is Onclogy: 
Oncology is the study of cancer, a disease characterised by abnormal cell growth in the body. Its specialities include surgical, medical and radiation oncology.

what is the work of an Oncologist:
A medical oncologist provides systemic therapy such as chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapies, and bone marrow transplants. Patients also find the pain and after-effects of chemotherapy difficult to handle, so doctors should work hard to ensure that the people in their care are physically and mentally comfortable.

Income Of An Oncologist:

In the government sector, a surgical oncologist could earn upto Rs 50000 to Rs 80000/month.So, the packages are very high gor oncologist. In private sector packages vary anyone can earn upto from 60000 to 2 lakh/month.

what skills you need: 
1. As an oncologist you have a capability to understand the condition of a patient and have to make yourself emotionally attach with patient.
2. should be sensitive.
3. should be aware of all new technologies which are coming day by day.
4. should be a good listener.

How You can enter in this field:
First of all you should be science student, should study biology, physics and chemistry in 12th class.Then enter in MBBS after which you can do either of these three-year coutses
1. MS Followed by a 3 year MCh programme
2. MD(medicine/paediatrics) with DM(medical oncology)
3. MD in radiotherapy.
4. Or you can opt for  DNB which is a three year degree course equivalent to the MD or MS. This degree is offered by National Board of Examination through multi-speciality, teaching hospital.
5. Diploma in Medical Radio-therapy ( DMRT )  Two year diploma course.


Some advantages of this profession:
1. You can always taste a progressive growth in this career.
2. Through paid fellowships anyone can go abroad for further studies or training.
3.After treating anybody's cancer you will find a great deal of satisfaction.
Some Disadvantages of this profession:
1. You need to update yourself regularly through CME courses , as well training takes lots of your time.
2. you may be exposed to hazardous chemicals while trating cancer patient.
3. Sometimes its feel very bad as number of your patient may not survive which makes this profession quite difficult.
