As we know Merchant Navy has two main divisions Navigation and Engineering. As Navigator officer person should have to look after the safe movement of a ship, loading and offloading of cargo, radio communication, as well as crew and passengers.

How you can get there
Should pass Class 12 with physics, chemistry, maths and English after that you can opt for
1. A three-year BSc nautical science course by clearing
the IIT joint entrance exam.
2.DNS programme - oneyear pre-sea training at an institute, followed by 18-month training on ship. To enrol, one has to pass the common entrance test of the Indian Maritime University.
3.An entrance test of private institutes or a shipping company To work as a deck officer and for further promotions, one must clear exams conducted by the ministry of shipping.

Personal Qualities
1.Be physically and mentally tough because you are away from home for long periods and face certain hazards/ risks at sea.
2. Should have leader ship Qualities.
3. Be adaptive and willing to live with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Pay Off
Monthly salary (earned only while you sail): Deck cadet: $350-$450 
Third officer: $2,000 to $3,500
Second officer: $3,000 to$4,500 
Chief officer: $5,000 to $9,000 
Master: $7,500 to $14,000 Pay packets can vary from different ships
